Polo Forest, also known as Vijaynagar Forest, is a captivating historical and natural heritage site located in Sabarkantha, Gujarat, at the foothills of the Aravalli range. Spanning 400 square kilometers, its name, derived from the Marwari word “Pol” (gate), signifies its historical role as a gateway between Gujarat and Rajasthan.
The forest holds a rich history dating back to the 10th century when Parihar kings of Idar established a town along the Harnav River. Later, in the 15th century, the Rathod Rajputs of Marwar conquered it, and the area flourished as a spiritual hub, home to exquisite Hindu and Jain temples. These architectural marvels were eventually reclaimed by the forest, remaining hidden until their rediscovery in the 20th century.
Today, Polo Forest is a vibrant eco-tourism destination. It boasts incredible biodiversity with over 450 medicinal plant species, 275 bird species (including Grey Hornbills and migratory birds), and various mammals. The serene Harnav River and Vanaj Dam add to its natural beauty. Historically, it offers ruins of 15th-century temples like the intricate Sharneshwar Shiva Temple and the expansive Jain Temple complex (Lakhena na Dera), showcasing remarkable carvings and religious harmony. Activities include trekking, birdwatching, camping, and heritage walks.
Polo Forest is open daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM, with no entry fees. The best time to visit is between October and March, when the weather is pleasant and the forest is lush post-monsoon. It is well-connected by road from Ahmedabad (145-160 km), with Himmatnagar being the nearest railway station. Accommodation options, including resorts and tent cities, are available nearby, often offering local cuisine. Polo Forest provides a unique blend of history, nature, and tranq
