Early Political Career & Rise (1980s – 2014):
Early Affiliation: Began his public life in 1980 by joining the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) as a young volunteer.
ÂStudent Politics: Became an active member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the RSS, and served as its Ahmedabad city unit secretary and later as joint secretary of the Gujarat unit.
ÂBharatiya Janata Party (BJP): Joined the BJP in 1987 and its youth wing, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), rising to positions like National Treasurer.
ÂGujarat Assembly: Served as a five-term MLA in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly (1997–2017), winning from Sarkhej for four consecutive elections (1997, 1998, 2002, 2007) and Naranpura in 2012. He won his 2007 election from Sarkhej with the highest margin of 2,32,823 votes in Gujarat Assembly elections at that time.
ÂÂGujarat Minister: Served as Minister of State for Home, Law and Justice, Prison, Border Security, Civil Defense, Excise, Home Guards, Transport, Prohibition, Gram Rakshak Dal, Police Housing, and Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs in the government led by Shri Narendra Modi.

National Leadership (2014 – Present):
National General Secretary & UP In-Charge: In 2013, he was appointed National General Secretary of the BJP and given charge of Uttar Pradesh for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, contributing to the party’s success in the state.
ÂBJP National President: He took over as the 10th National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party in July 2014, serving until 2020. During his tenure, the party became the world’s largest political party with over 10 crore registered members.

Elected to the Rajya Sabha (Upper House of Parliament) from Gujarat in August 2017.

Key Initiatives as Union Minister (2019 – Present)

As the Union Minister of Home Affairs and Minister of Co-operation, his recent work includes:
Infrastructure & Development Projects: Dedicating development projects worth over Rs 825 crore to the people of Haryana, including new nursing colleges, police housing, a 100-bed hospital, and Critical Care Blocks.
Disaster Mitigation: Heading a high-level committee that approved disaster mitigation and recovery projects worth Rs 4,545 crore for nine states, including funding for the restoration of wetlands in Assam and Urban Flood Risk Management programs for 11 cities.
Cooperative Sector Growth: Hailed the Rs 325 crore expansion of the Sabar Dairy (Amul Plant) in Rohtak, Haryana, emphasizing the ‘Sahkar Se Samriddhi’ (Prosperity through Cooperation) mantra. He aims to connect every village to the cooperative movement by 2029 and announced plans to set up over 75,000 dairy cooperatives under White Revolution 2.0.
Legal Reforms: Promoted the implementation of the country’s new criminal laws, projecting a faster disposal of cases, on average, within three years after 2026. He noted the conviction rate in Haryana doubled to 80% following the laws’ implementation.
Promotion of Indigenous Industries: Distributed toolkits and Rs 301 crore in margin money under the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) for local artisans. He highlighted the growth of the Khadi industry to a Rs 1.70 lakh crore industry.
Digital Self-Reliance: Switched to Zoho Mail for his official communications, endorsing the “swadeshi” (indigenous) technology and the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
ÂPolicy Actions (as Home Minister): Played a key role in the abrogation of Article 370 and the reorganisation of Jammu and Kashmir. Drug seizures and arrests of drug traders in India saw a manifold increase in the initial three years of his tenure.
