The department of International Medicine at New Mexico has just been sanctioned a grant of five million US dollars to conduct various researches on diseases at an international level. Its laboratory works in collaboration with over 10 different research institutes and companies across the US and the world.
Dr Durvasula said, "The purpose of the visit is to begin the MoU process for the joint research. We have been visiting various science faculties here regarding this," he said.
Dr Shah, who earlier worked as the Chief Investigator for the Food and Drug Administration, US, said the first joint project would likely be on the rise in kidney stone patients along the Saurashtra coastline. According to experts, the problem of kidney stones has become widespread and common on the coastline from Okha to Bhavnagar, and the coastal villages in Amreli and Junagadh districts have been the worst affected.
He said the research would not only help students of both the universities to share knowledge and resources, but also help in finding reasons and precautions for this diseases, which is showing an alarming rise in the region. "In Saurashtra, kidney stone patients vary from 6 to 60 years. While saline water is a culprit, in the US, instances abound in areas, which are not affected by saline water. It's difficult to point out one cause or reason. That's where the joint research would help us in reaching the exact conclusions," said Shah.
Though Saurashtra has a dedicated and specialised kidney hospital, a lack of any survey in this region has led to little availability of data to conduct any sort of conclusion so far.
