“There is no reason for me to resign. We will put up the fight,” said a confident Balgha, who ruled out the possibility of any more Congress councillor joining the BJP.
“The Congress loyalists are with the party and they would be with the party in future,” she said in spite of her party strength being decimated.
An upbeat BJP on the other hand said that they are sure of getting its own president soon.
“If not this time, we are confident to have a two-third majority required to bring a no confidence vote against Balgha before the next general board meeting after two months,” said a top BJP leader.
Ahead of the crucial general board meeting on Thursday, the BJP reportedly took all its councillors on a trip to Junagadh, as a precautionary measure to avoid “any chance of horse trading” before the general board meeting.
Thursday’s meeting is expected to be a stormy affair, as the BJP will try to assert its majority and is expected to take a lead in the formation of various committees. Instead of the Congress, it will be now be the BJP that will be deciding the heads for committees on health, road and building, education and others. But it might have to wait for another general board meet to bring a no-confidence vote against Balgha.
The Congress, which came to power in 2005 with 20 members, is now reduced to minority with 13 councillors, as one by one its members started leaving the party for the BJP after the latter's stupendous victory in the Assembly elections.
On January 15, three Congress councillors- N D Jadeja, Bharat Parmar and Raja Suva-switched their loyalties following in the footsteps of their former colleagues
Rajkot District Panchayat vice-president Hardevsinh Jadeja, Nitin Dhakecha, Dhrvkumarsinh Jadeja and Prafulaba Jadeja, who had formally joined the BJP on January 11.
