Rajkot, May 29 After nearly 10 days of mounting Dalit protests over the controversial building name change resolution passed at the Rajkot Municipal Corporation general board meeting, the Congress conducted its first protest rally in the city on Thursday. |

The party leaders met Commissioner of Police Sudhir Sinha over the issue and blocked the Race Course Ring Road. Congress president Jaswantsinh Bhatti said the party was keen on adopting a middle path. "We are not against the new building being named after the late BJP leader Chiman Shukla. There are many other buildings that can be named after him, but the RMC building should only be known by the name its known -- Ambedkar Bhavan." | |
Though this was the first time the party has come out in the open to register its protest, Bhatti said, the party had registered its protest right since the beginning. "The Congress walked out from the general board meeting because the resolution was passed in its absence," he said. The Dalits had gone on a rampage and resorted to arson on May 21 after the BJP-ruled RMC refused to roll back its decision of naming the central zone office after the late BJP leader Chiman Shukla.
