Rajkot, July 03 The nationwide bandh call given by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) received a mixed response in the Saurashtra region on Thursday. Many markets in the Rajkot city and scattered shops in the residential areas of the city remained open, even as activists of the VHP, Bajrang Dal, Shiv Sena and ABVP forced closure in some areas. |

Most of the shops and business establishments remained closed in the morning. But as the day progressed, shopkeepers started off with their business considering that they had police protection. The bandh was relatively successful in places like Ranawav in Porbandar, Halwad in Surendranagar and Amreli, where almost all the markets responded to the call. Marketing yards at the all centres of the region also remained closed. On the other hand, Gondal, Jetpur and Jasdan in Rajkot district gave a mixed response. | |
A few minor incidents of violence were reported from some areas. ABVP members tried to ransack Nirmala School, which was functioning as usual.
Following this, many schools in the city, which were open, relieved their students for the day.
Rajkot city Police Commissioner Sudhir Sinha said: "We had detained around 22 people till afternoon. They were detained for violating a notification, which warned against moving in a group of more than four people. There were no reports of any rampage except one at Nirmala School."
