First Indian Woman Photographer Homai Vyarawalla Passed Away




The first lady photographer and journalist Homai Vyarawalla is not among us. Before 2 days on 15th January she died at Baroda.

On 9th December, 1913 she was born at Navsari district of Gujarat in a middle class Parsi family. She studied at J.J.College of Arts Mumbai, and then entered into the Photography course. During her career, she captured hundreds of Photos. And most of his images were published in ‘Iconic’ magazine. At start, she worked in a magazine, ‘The Illustrated Weekly of India’. In her career, she was the photographer of famous personalities like, Jawaharlal Nehru, Mohandas Gandhi, S. Radhakrishnan, Sardar Vallabhbhi Patel and Indira Gandhi. Vyarawalla was in photography for more than 3 decades. And she was autonomous in her whole life.

After death of his husband in 1973, she came to Baroda and she loved number ‘13’. She had a great fascination for number 13 and she was born in 1913, she got married on age of 13, and her first car number-plate was ‘DLD-13’. She lived a very simple lifestyle.

At last stage of his life she was under treatment at Private Nursing Home Baroda. She took her last breaths on 15th January, 2012 and with this an era of Journalism was gone. In 2011 Homai Vyarawalla got second best honor ‘Padmavibhushan’ of India.
